Earth Day Events — GA Rescheduled!

Students in the Philippines demonstrate for Earth Day 2011.

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22. In celebration of the planet we all live on, we’ve got a series of events coming up this week. It’s going to be a beautiful week, so come out and enjoy the sunshine while you spread the Occupy message. We hope to see you.

Friday April 20: “The Big Fix” movie premiere

In collaboration with Black Rock Solar, Occupy UNR is hosting the Nevada premiere of the documentary The Big Fix. It’s an eye-opening movie that exposes the corruption that surrounded the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

We’re showing the film on the 2-year anniversary of the spill. You may believe that the spill has been cleaned up and the Gulf restored since that disaster, but this film tells a different story — the truth of what the cleanup efforts really involved, and the lasting effects on the Gulf environment. If you’ve never heard of Corexit, come out and get educated!

Saturday, April 21: GA rescheduled, Dinner still on

This week’s General Assembly will be held on Sunday at Idlewild Park.

The People’s Dinner needs your help! Every week Occupy Reno shops, prepares, and cooks, what we call, “The Peoples Dinner” for local persons and families without a home. On Saturdays at 5:00pm we meet outside the Community Assistance Center and serve approximately 300 or more of Reno’s most poverty-stricken. Find out more here.

Sunday, April 22: EARTH DAY at Idlewild Park + Occupy Yoga

Occupy Reno will have a booth at Reno’s annual Earth Day celebration in Idlewild Park. This is a great event for everyone, with live entertainment, food and of course an excellent environment for spreading the Occupy message.

Occupy Yoga will begin at 12pm, and the Occupy Reno General Assembly starts at 1pm. Bring environment-themed signs and be ready to invite new people into our group!

Spring Has Come and the 99% Are Here to Stay…

It’s been a long cold winter.  Locally, nationally and internationally big money and their interests have attempted to shut the occupy movement down, or at least shut it up.  But you can’t kill an idea, especially one whose time has come.  Occupy is alive and doing well.  And we are preparing to take to the streets of Reno again this Spring.

Upcoming Events

Tuesday—April 17, 2012—4:00 to 6:00 pm

In solidarity with the international anti-war day, Occupy Reno and Code Pink will be protesting outside of the Vassar Street Post Office.  Occupy Reno supports the post office and participated in saving this particular location from the chopping block. We chose this venue because it is also Tax Day and there will be a captive audience and possibly news crews on site.  Since the police and news outlets have largely been ignoring us lately, (apparently we are “too peaceful”) we’re going to make it easy and bring the message to them.  End our addiction to foreign oil.  Support our troops and bring them home.  EMPLOY NOT DEPLOY.

Sunday—April 22, 2012—9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Occupy Reno will be present at the annual Earth Day gathering at Idlewild Park.  Your mother (Mother Earth) wants you to join us!  We support sustainable energy, local green businesses and local organic farming, all of which help to build a healthy and peaceful future. GMOs have got to go!  Join us on the lawn behind the skate park at noon for a free Occupy Your Yoga Mat class, followed by a General Assembly (GA) at 1:00.  We encourage everyone to stop by and find out what we are so passionate about.  Come and discuss issues that are uniting to all of us. You Are the 99%!

Saturday—May 5, 2012 —11:00 am to 5:00 pm

Join Occupy Reno, local students, workers and unions in a peaceful rally in downtown Reno in front of the skating rink in support of the international, annual May Day rally.  Stand with us and support ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR ALL.  Nationally most other cities will observe this event on May 1st but locally it has been decided to gather on May 5th because it is a Saturday and most people attending have jobs and school to attend on weekdays.  On May 1st Occupy has called a national general strike, encouraging the 99% to show the 1% what a day without laborers looks like.  We realize a large number of the 99% cannot jeopardize their jobs and participate by not working that day.  We are also asking you to refrain from making all unnecessary purchases and to avoid banking on May 1st.

Every Monday—5:30 pm

Join Occupy Reno and Sierra Interfaith in a peace vigil in front of the federal building on Virginia Street.

Every Saturday—5:00 pm

Occupy Reno serves a homemade, hot dinner every Saturday evening to homeless people at the Record Street shelter.  We welcome and encourage ALL LEVELS of involvement.  Every week Occupy Reno shops, prepares, sets up and serves, what we call, “The Peoples Dinner” for approximately 300 or more of Reno’s neediest people.  Won’t you please help?
