Homeless Outreach Working Group
Needs Your Help

Every Saturday at 5:00pm, the homeless outreach working group delivers and serves cooked meals to hundreds of locals without a home.

They are asking for your help. Please donate any of the following items to any Wednesday General Assembly:

• Requested bulk food items: meat, potatoes, vegetables, bread, tomato sauce, spaghetti noodles, chicken and beef broth…

• Other requested items: toiletries (travel size), socks, clothing…

cooking 14 pounds of spaghetti

The group prepares large batches of home-cooked food each week between Wednesday and Saturday morning. Can’t donate food, but would like to donate your time? Join them in serving food every Saturday at 5:00pm at the Community Assistance Center on Record Street.

Friday Night Demonstrations

The people have spoken! Demonstrating on Friday nights in downtown Reno is an awesome way to bring attention to the issues. After taking questions and educating dozens of locals at the NDAA march last Friday evening, we are coming back for more.

Join us downtown every Friday night from 8:00PM-10:00PM. We will be meeting at City Hall and marching onward. Bring your signs, flashlights, glowsticks, flyers, and noisemakers!

Brian Duggan: Reno City Council Denies Anti-Corporate Personhood Resolution

“On Wednesday, the Reno City Council voted 6-1 to deny a resolution that would have said the, “expenditure of corporate money to influence the electoral process is no longer a form of constitutionally protected speech.”

Within this legislation, provisions in Title X, Subtitle D permit the indefinite detention of anyone around the globe suspected of terrorism, including US citizens, using indistinct and problematic definitions.  The controversial nature of the NDAA for fiscal year 2012 has gone largely unnoticed by traditional media outlets.

The National Lawyers Guild had this to say about the NDAA:

“The National Lawyers Guild adds its voice to the many others who oppose this legislation. Our opposition is not based solely on the fact that this bill allows indefinite detention of US citizens and residents or that the presumed “battlefield” encompasses the entire globe. We oppose indefinite detention without trial because it is immoral and cruel and because it violates the U.S. Constitution and international law.”

Occupy UNR will be holding their second rally this Thursday, 2.2.2012, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm on the steps of the UNR Mathewson-IGT Library. Guest speakers will include UNR professors, students, and occupiers. Performances by local band Merkin. Bring your friends, family, and learn how to get more involved!

The 1.28 General Assembly adjourned before we could vote on the location of our next GA. Without an official ruling on the topic we are asking for your input:

Recap of wednesday, 1.25.2012

The City of Reno addressed the issue of “corporate personhood” and refused to support legislation barring corporations and other entities from donating unlimited funds to political campaigns. The vote was 6 – 1 against supporting the people’s struggle for a free democracy. We would like to thank Councilman Aiazzi for bringing forward the resolution and for being the only member brave enough to vote for it.

We will continue to persuade the City of Reno to join the growing ranks of cities around the nation that have adopted a similar pledge. Click here to view a map showing the municipalities that have passed resolutions and ordinances abolishing Corporate Personhood.

That same day, the Moana Springs occupation site officially ended at 4pm. Many thanks to all those who helped fulfill our pledge of leaving no trace behind.

Several dedicated occupiers decided to occupy the springs without a permit from the City of Reno, asserting that it was a constitutionally protected venue for free-speech. One was subsequently arrested for it.

• Tech was approved to purchase a new server. The cost is approximately $20 a month.

• The location of the Media Committee meeting has been moved to Reno City Hall for Sunday 1.29.12 @ 1pm.

“Resolution in support of a Constitutional Amendment and other legislative actions ensuring that only human beings, not corporations, are endowed with constitutional rights and that money is not speech, and therefore the expenditure of corporate money to influence the electoral process is no longer a form of constitutionally protected speech.”

This is the first step the City of Reno can do to help the people reclaim their government from the corporate aristocracy.  Will Reno be the next city to support a true people’s democracy or will they uphold the status quo of corporate governance?

This item will be addressed sometime between 12:15pm and 6:00pm (that’s the best the City Info desk would provide us). We strongly encourage anyone who supports this measure to submit a Public Comment to the City Council urging them to adopt this resolution (Agenda Item L.5). If you cannot be present to speak to the Council itself, you can still submit your comment into the public archives for future generations to reference what side of history you were on.

Petitioning our Government for a redress of grievances

Greetings from Occupy Reno,

This last Saturday, 1.21.2012, marked the 2-year anniversary of the Citizens United v. FEC SCOTUS decision. Many thanks to the brave men and women who took the streets in front of the Federal Building to protest against the counterfeit democracy that has plagued our great nation. We stand in solidarity with all people who defend justice over control and people over profits.

1.21.2012 General Assembly Updates:

• Our next General Assembly will be on 1.28.2012 at 1:00pm in front of City Hall.
• We have decided to pursue the old RTC bus station as an alternative occupation. Stay tuned for updates.

On 1.25.2012, the City of Reno will be deciding possible action to support legislation that restricts corporations from donating funds to political campaigns. Will the City of Reno support the people’s fight to retake democracy or will they sell-out the public interest in order to further their career opportunities?

Join us on Monday (1.23.2012) at Strega Bar for the 5:30pm Action meeting. We will be discussing plans to ensure that the people’s voice is heard in the halls of Reno City Council.

We will be seen. We will be heard. We will not leave. Occupy Reno. Occupy Everywhere.

1/21/2012 marks the 2 year anniversary of the infamous Citizens United v. FEC Supreme Court decision.

This dangerous ruling dictates that Corporations are allowed to donate UNLIMITED funds to political campaigns as a form of Constitutionally protected “free-speech” and sets the stage for the auctioning of our politicians. It is the most open and direct attack by the 1% on one of America’s most prominent founding principles: Democracy.

It has now become necessary that we, the people, invoke OUR free-speech rights to eclipse the megaphone of the 1% and end the corporate electioneering of OUR Representatives. Through the People’s microphone, we can dismantle the counterfeit democracy that has usurped our governance and build a more perfect union that serves the true will of the governed.

Join us as we exercise our inalienable rights to peaceably assemble and petition our government for a redress of grievances.

When: Saturday, 1/19/2012, immediately after the General Assembly (approximately 2:00pm)

Where: In front of City Hall on 1^st & Virginia St.

What: We will march in the streets from City Hall to the Federal Building (Virginia & Liberty). We will use   the People’s Mic to air any and all grievances the public has towards its elected officials.

The fight to retake Washington begins in your backyard. OCCUPY RENO.

“At this past General Assembly, we discussed many issues facing Occupy Reno as we move forward. There were many passionate words and inspiring speeches. While there was some verbal sparring–which there will always be when a bunch of fiery, smart, and strong-willed individuals get together, as someone wisely pointed out at the GA–everyone at the meeting was committed to moving forward. In this spirit, we are marching on. We are pursuing options for staying at Moana Springs as well as pursing other opportunities to occupy other locations.

We do not know whether or not we will have to leave Moana Springs when our original permit expires next Wednesday (January 25th) at 4:00PM. If we do leave, we want to make sure that we leave no trace behind. On Sunday, we will be cleaning the site starting at 12noon. However, if you have a truck/trailer/hauling means or a site to store items, please visit the site whenever you can to pick up items that are not immediately necessary for the occupiers still there. There will be occupiers at the site until the 25th (and perhaps beyond)!

Finally, thank you to all those who spoke today at the GA and the City
Council Meeting. We truly appreciate you and your words of support.”

At this Saturday’s General Assembly, it was apparent that we are at a pivotal moment in our movement. On Wednesday, we will be one week away from our original permit expiring. On Wednesday, the City Council may discuss a fee schedule that may affect our ability to remain at this site. In light of these events and tensions within our group, at Wednesday’s General Assembly we will discuss how we continue moving forward with Occupy Reno. Wednesday’s GA is not about the end of Occupy Reno, but a GA to discuss how we will continue Occupy Reno. At the GA we may discuss what has come to divide us, but the GA will also be a time to come together to discuss what continues to unite us. Wednesday’s GA is a time to share knowledge—to become better informed about our movement and each other. Wednesday’s GA is a time to listen to each other. Wednesday’s GA is a time to air concerns. Wednesday’s GA is a time to introduce ideas. Wednesday’s GA is a time to understand what each of us has at stake in this movement.

To effectively facilitate this discussion, the agenda format of this GA has been slightly adapted. The meeting will begin as usual with an introduction to the facilitator team, a review of the process of the GA, and announcements. After this opening, we will move into a discussion of moving forward in Occupy Reno. To begin the discussion—and in place of committee report backs—each committee is asked to send a representative to the GA to give a report. The report should discuss—as objectively as possible—the committee’s understanding of the future of Occupy Reno. This report should help inform the GA as a whole on issues that the committee faces. For example, the Finance Committee could report that it takes X amount of money to cover insurance each month, X amount of money to cover port-a-potties each month, etc. This data leads the Finance Committee to have X, Y, and Z concerns. Another example: The Green Committee has been doing X, Y, and Z. If Occupy Reno does A, then these projects will be impacted in E, F, and G ways. Another example: The Camp and Infrastructure Committee reports that X number of people are currently occupying Moana Springs full time. Of these full-time occupiers, Y number of people have no other home to go to. These committee reports are all about conveying information to the GA so that every member of the GA can engage in a knowledgeable discussion of our future. To be clear, these committee reports are just that, reports. They are not opinions of individual speakers.

Following the committee reports, the stack will be open. Any and every individual here is encouraged to join the stack and have their voice heard. In an effort to have as many voices heard as possible, individuals that have yet to speak will be given priority over individuals that have already spoken. This means that if Jane is in the stack for the second time, John—who has yet to be heard—may be moved in front of her.

In a further effort to have every voice that wants to speak heard, each committee representative and each individual speaker has a 3-minute time limit. If an individual has more to say, the individual is encouraged to join the stack again. For this reason, each committee representative and individual is encouraged to prepare some notes in advance so that she or he can cover everything that he or she wishes to say in the allotted time. In forming your thoughts, remember the principles upon which this movement has been formed and the principles that have become important to each of us as the movement developed. In particular, let us remember that Occupy Reno has been a nonviolent, peaceful movement.

The GA will conclude the meeting with a recap from the scribe and a soapbox for anything that anyone wants to say outside of the scope of the “moving forward” discussion.

This is an important GA. We ask everyone who is able to attend to stay as long as possible. As the temperatures have begun to drop, we ask everyone to dress warmly for the GA. The facilitation team will make the site of the GA as comfortable as possible.
