Join local activists and volunteers each week as we shop, prepare, and cook for local persons and families without a home. On Saturdays at 5:00pm, Occupy Reno joins the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality (RISE) outside of the Community Assistance Center (CAC) at 335 Record St to serve approximately 250 or more of Reno’s most poverty-stricken until 6:00pm.
This hands-on grassroots project began in January of this year. As word spreads on the streets of Reno, the dinner line grows larger every Saturday. As a community in one of the hardest-hit states in the nation, let’s change the way we serve people and families who have fallen through the cracks in our broken system.
Three Ways You Can Help Feed The Homeless:
1. DONATE ONLINE. Every dollar you donate serves dinner to THREE out of approximately 250 people. So if you can’t join us in person but would like to help us purchase food items each week, your contributions would be greatly appreciated and carefully utilized. Visit RenoInitiative.org to donate.
2. DONATE FOOD, COMFORT ITEMS, OR COOKING/SERVING SUPPLIES. Meet us at the Community Assistance Center on any Saturday between 5-6pm to drop off your donations. We will store and preserve food donations and use them to cook for the following Saturday dinner (or later if food is nonperishable). The CAC is located at 335 Record Street (one block east of 4th Street and Evans). You will find us on the east side of the CAC parking lot. View map and directions.
Requested Food Essentials:
> ground turkey or beef
> chicken
> produce: tomatos, onions, pepper, etc
> nonperishables: canned beans, large bags of rice or pasta
> gallons of water and/or juice: apple, grape, cranberry
> individual sized juices or snacks (chips, jello, yogurt, etc.)
> anything you are willing to donate!
If you have comfort donations, such as clothing, socks, shoes, blankets, toiletries, etc., please bring these items and we will make them available immediately.
3. MAKE A DISH AND SERVE WITH THE PEOPLE! Make your own large meal, side dish, dessert, or beverage with your friends and family and serve it with us at the CAC parking lot at 335 Record Street on any Saturday at 5:00pm (view map and directions). We’d love to meet you! Recommended: bring serving utensils and a fold-out table if you have one.
Potluck-style dishes:
homemade potato salad; pot of spaghetti; hot dogs and buns; casseroles; hearty soup; crate of fruits, e.g. oranges, bananas, pears; batches of hot biscuits; batches of cookies, cupcakes, or brownies; a homemade beverage such as lemonade, hot chocolate, or coffee
All assistance and donations are greatly appreciated! We welcome and encourage ALL levels of involvement.
