In solidarity with the National Day of Action for Education, the student organization of Occupy Reno is calling for a massive statewide student walkout THIS Thursday, March 1, 2012.
Educators and students throughout the state are encouraged to peacefully walk out of class at 1:30PM and demonstrate to bring attention to the public education crisis in Nevada, including massive budget cuts, teacher layoffs, elimination of essential programs, and college tuition increases.
Additionally, Occupy UNR will host two major events at the University of Nevada, Reno to coincide with the walkout.
A rally and speak-out will begin at 2:00PM on the steps of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. The speak-out will provide a venue for students and teachers to respond to the budget cuts that have severely damaged academic programs, administrative departments, and vital support services for students. The event will feature live music and art, food, information booths, and various interactive activities.
At 6:00PM, K-12 teachers, university-level faculty and staff, and students of all ages across Northern Nevada are invited to mobilize for an education forum and General Assembly on the steps of UNR’s Getchell Library. This event is open to the public; all local organizations and citizens negatively affected by the Nevada budget cuts are strongly encouraged to attend and speak. Occupy Reno asks all participants to raise their voice in the call to “STOP BALANCING THE BUDGET ON THE BACKS OF THE 99%!”
