It’s been a long cold winter. Locally, nationally and internationally big money and their interests have attempted to shut the occupy movement down, or at least shut it up. But you can’t kill an idea, especially one whose time has come. Occupy is alive and doing well. And we are preparing to take to the streets of Reno again this Spring.
Tuesday—April 17, 2012—4:00 to 6:00 pm
In solidarity with the international anti-war day, Occupy Reno and Code Pink will be protesting outside of the Vassar Street Post Office. Occupy Reno supports the post office and participated in saving this particular location from the chopping block. We chose this venue because it is also Tax Day and there will be a captive audience and possibly news crews on site. Since the police and news outlets have largely been ignoring us lately, (apparently we are “too peaceful”) we’re going to make it easy and bring the message to them. End our addiction to foreign oil. Support our troops and bring them home. EMPLOY NOT DEPLOY.
Sunday—April 22, 2012—9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Occupy Reno will be present at the annual Earth Day gathering at Idlewild Park. Your mother (Mother Earth) wants you to join us! We support sustainable energy, local green businesses and local organic farming, all of which help to build a healthy and peaceful future. GMOs have got to go! Join us on the lawn behind the skate park at noon for a free Occupy Your Yoga Mat class, followed by a General Assembly (GA) at 1:00. We encourage everyone to stop by and find out what we are so passionate about. Come and discuss issues that are uniting to all of us. You Are the 99%!
Saturday—May 5, 2012 —11:00 am to 5:00 pm
Join Occupy Reno, local students, workers and unions in a peaceful rally in downtown Reno in front of the skating rink in support of the international, annual May Day rally. Stand with us and support ECONOMIC JUSTICE FOR ALL. Nationally most other cities will observe this event on May 1st but locally it has been decided to gather on May 5th because it is a Saturday and most people attending have jobs and school to attend on weekdays. On May 1st Occupy has called a national general strike, encouraging the 99% to show the 1% what a day without laborers looks like. We realize a large number of the 99% cannot jeopardize their jobs and participate by not working that day. We are also asking you to refrain from making all unnecessary purchases and to avoid banking on May 1st.
Every Monday—5:30 pm
Join Occupy Reno and Sierra Interfaith in a peace vigil in front of the federal building on Virginia Street.
Every Saturday—5:00 pm
Occupy Reno serves a homemade, hot dinner every Saturday evening to homeless people at the Record Street shelter. We welcome and encourage ALL LEVELS of involvement. Every week Occupy Reno shops, prepares, sets up and serves, what we call, “The Peoples Dinner” for approximately 300 or more of Reno’s neediest people. Won’t you please help?
